New Work

A few of the images added to the STOCKCZECH library in recent months

May 2008

Southern Bohemia is perhaps the most beautiful part of the Czech Republic, and not surprisingly the area around Lake Lipno is a magnet for tourists from Germany and Austria, as well as for the Czechs. It's still possible, however, to find quiet, peaceful spots to while away a few peaceful hours.

I've been hard at work scanning all the old transparencies sent back to me by Sylvia Cordaiy. Some brought back very vivid memories.

This shot was taken in May 1992, just before the first free elections to be held since the fall of the communist regime some three years earlier.

Wenceslas Square was filled with these booths, all representing a different political party, and all anxious to woo new voters with their promises.

Not new work, but rather new-old. After many years of working with the Sylvia Cordaiy Photolibrary, I was sorry to receive the news that Sylvia has decided to wind down the film side of her library, and will be returning all my transparencies over the next few months. This includes quite a number from my early visits to the then Czechoslovakia as well as the first years of the Czech Republic.

Most of these were shot on Fuji Velvia and include a wide variety of subjects. Not just classic travel images of Prague and Cesky Krumlov (the castle tower had just been restored when this image was taken), but also a wide diversity of material - from unique shots of very rural villages to coverage of the elections that led to the creation of the separate states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Winter is about the only time that you can get shots of the quaint little houses in Prague Castle's Golden Lane without hundreds of tourists in the way. I'd hoped for some fresh snow to add to the fairytale atmosphere, but once again no luck in that direction!
